About The Course
This practical, hands-on course is designed for anyone who holds a Herpetology Permit in Tasmania who wishes to develop or refresh their skills in providing first aid to our state’s three venomous species.
Led by Veronika Ross, an experienced snake handler and rehabilitator with many years of hands-on expertise, this workshop provides safe, realistic, skills-based training (no live snakes will be used). You will learn how to assess and respond to common injuries and conditions encountered in snake rescue and rehabilitation, including:
- Dog and cat attack injuries
- Crush injuries from fences, traps, or heavy objects
- Dehydration and malnutrition
- Burns from fire or electrical sources
- External parasites and disease
Emphasis will be placed on safe handling principles, stress minimisation, secure containment, and when to seek veterinary assistance. You’ll gain confidence in providing appropriate first aid while safeguarding both yourself and the animal.
Important: This course is only open to individuals who have completed appropriate venomous snake handling training. Handling should be kept to a minimum at all times, and all rescue and rehabilitation activities must comply with Tasmanian wildlife regulations.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills to stabilise injured snakes and improve their chances of successful recovery and release.
